Legacy un-inherited
Jade (Katherine Barrell), her sister Alice (Sai Bennett), Jade's boyfriend Sam (Tim Rozon), Billy (Luke Newton) and Spenser (Craig Stein) are a group of urban explorers and activists. They are challenged by Jade's ex-boyfriend Dane to infiltrate a fenced off area surrounding a lake. Once there the group find an island in the middle of a lake. When they get to the island they begin to explore. What they find is terror. On the island is an abandoned facility that is home to a giant crocodile that was genetically created. Now they need to try to get off the island and back to civilization without getting killed.
As far as the crocodile is concerned it takes a long time before you see it. Half the fun of a monster movie is the monster. Otherwise it’s just a psychological thriller. Most of the movie takes place at night or underground so even when the croc appears it’s too dark to get a good look at it.
"Lake Placid: Legacy" was released in 2018 and was directed by Darrell Roodt. The film is a SYFY channel movie and is labeled the sixth installment of the Lake Placid series. I’m not sure why they tried connecting this to the “Lake Placid” franchise since this one is a total deviation from the series. Its connection to the others is tenuous at best. Also, this one is played straight. No camp. The only connection I could actually see to the “Lake Placid” movies is the name “Lake Placid”, the use of a giant crocodile and a brief mention by a scientist that one of the creatures was stolen in the past and brought to lake called “Black Lake” in Maine. Other than that it’s really a stand alone movie. Oh, and no Bickermans.
One thing I did notice that was different with this movie was it was made in South Africa. Except for the first one being made in British Columbia all the others were made in Bulgaria. I don’t know if that had an effect on the difference with this last one or not.
Other than the lack of monster I would normally been OK with the movie except they tried to amp its bankability by tying it to a rather successful franchise. Granted a lame franchise but one with quite a following.
One last thing with this one, no sex and no nudity.
