SpaceGodzilla’s creation is the effect of some of Godzilla’s DNA being brought into space by either Biollante or Mothra. They were then swallowed by a black hole and then either pulled or pushed out through a white hole. Then it rapidly grew in its own evolutionary system. It assimilated crystals and was exposed to intense energy from stars exploding. Now the resulting “SpaceGodzilla” is on its way to Earth.
M.O.G.U.E.R.A. or Mobile Operations G-Force Universal Expert Robot: Aero-type is a robot created by the JSDF to replace Mechagodzilla. The robot was sent into space to intercept SpaceGodzilla. Unfortunately the robot gets damaged by SpaceGodzilla and the monster makes its way to Earth.
A team from the “Godzilla Countermeasures Center” go to Birth Island where Little Godzilla lives. Their objective is to plant a mind control devise on Godzilla. Hopefully, with this devise, they can control him enough mentally to keep him away. Psychic Miki Saegusa is asked to be part of the team. She is the one who is to psychically make contact with Godzilla. When SpaceGodzilla gets to Earth he lands on Birth Island. Godzilla also makes his way to the island. SpaceGodzilla traps Little Godzilla in a crystal prison and kicks Godzilla’s butt. It then takes off flying towards Japan. Godzilla swims after it.
Miki gets kidnapped by bad guys who want to use her to control Godzilla. She gets rescued just before SpaceGodzilla shows up. SpaceGodzilla builds a fortress from space crystals. Godzilla shows up and the repaired M.O.G.U.E.R.A. arrives as well. SpaceGodzilla once again kicks butt. The JSDF need a new plan.
“Godzilla vs SpaceGodzilla” was released in 1994 and was directed by Kensho Yamashita. It is the 21st Godzilla film in the franchise and the 6th in the Heisei series. M.O.G.U.E.R.A. first appeared in the film “The Mysterians” 1957.
The movie was OK. Not one of my favorites but it wasn’t bad either. The plot seems a little involved. I didn’t see the point of Little Godzilla or having Miki kidnapped by the Japanese mob. Both story lines kind of fizzed out.
As for the monsters, SpaceGodzilla reminded me of the evil queen in “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs”. Isn’t that a robe with a huge white collar that he’s wearing? Godzilla himself looked proper but I swear the other one was wearing a crown. I also was not fond of the M.O.G.U.E.R.A.. It looked like a robot with thunder thighs.
Little Godzilla looked a little better than in the Showa series but he is not on my favorite monsters list. He’s more like an annoying child and gets in the way of the monster action. I prefer my Godzilla’s big and nasty not cute and fatherly. Mothra’s Shobijin show up for a cameo as well as a mini Mothra that I’ve never seen before.
Supposedly composer Akira Ifukube refused to be involved in the film after reading the script, which reminded him too much of a teen idol film and included rap music. Not sure if that’s true or not since no rap music made it into the movie.
Lots of people hated it but I wouldn’t go that far. For that honor I’d have go with “Son of Godzilla” 1967.
