John Prescott (Tod Andrews) is on his way back to Los Angeles when he passes a young woman alongside the road whose little red sports car appears to be broken down. The woman is a beautiful blond so he stops to see if he can help. The young woman’s name is Lily (Eve Brent). John checks out her car and finds that she is out of gas. He offers to take her to a gas station, and she agrees.
On the way he stops at a bar and offers to buy her a drink and some dinner. The bartender (Jack Lomas) has an unusual reaction at the sight of Lily. He goes to a phone booth and calls a man named Morgan Debs (Boris Karloff). At hearing the name, the young woman panics and runs out of the bar. John wants to know what is wrong. She promises to meet him later and explain everything to him. They agree to meet at a place called Lookout Point.
Lily shows up at Lookout Point but so does Morgan Debs. Lily, once again, runs off. Morgan tries to tell John that there are things going on that he doesn’t understand. John finds out that Lily’s last name is Kirby. He visits Lily’s mother (Claudia Bryar) and finds out something about Lily that makes him more confused than ever.
“Girl on the Road” is the third episode created for the anthology series “The Veil”. It was one of 4 episodes compiled into a full-length anthology feature and titled "Destination Nightmare". The other episodes were "Destination Nightmare”, “Whatever Happened to Peggy” and "The Return of Madame Vernoy."
The story is based on a standard urban legend. Sometimes it is referred to as the Phantom hitchhiker where a traveler comes upon someone in need who disappears as if they were never there to begin with. I’ve even heard the story where the stranded person was the ghost of someone who died on the road or corner or bridge on their prom night or some other special event.
