Dr. Bob Frankenstein (Mark Blankfield) is the great-great grandson of Baron Victor Frankenstein. To disguise himself, he has taken the last name Frankenheimer. Bob works with his assistant Iggy (Leslie Jordan) in the basement of Los Angeles General Hospital, on a secret experiment. Like his ancestor before him, Bob is trying to create life. A power surge in the basement causes everything there to be in black and white.
Bob and Iggy have been busy. To create his monster Bob has Iggy get him whatever body parts he needs. To get the parts Bob needs, Iggy has been sabotaging the operations of Dr. Saperstein (Lou Cutell). So far, Saperstein has lost five patients in just one week. Bob is in competition with Dr. Andrew Dixon (Hamilton Mitchell) at being the resident genius of the hospital and getting all the funding they need for their specific projects. Dr. Dixon is working on an anti-aging serum.
The head of the hospital, Dr. Frank Reutgar (Jonathan Farwell), is losing control of the hospital activities. When not being reprimanded by the hospital’s resident psychiatrist and dominatrix, Dr. Alice Singleton (Kathy Shower), Reutgar spends his time trying to find out why Saperstein’s patients keep dying and what the secret experiment is that Dr. Frankenheimer is working on.
Bob’s experiment is almost complete. All he needs is the brain of a genius. He sends Iggy to the mortuary to acquire the brain of a young genius who died but accidentally acquires the head of a teenager, with an eating disorder, who drowned around the same time. Not knowing that the brain is not the one he is looking for, Bob puts it into his monster.
The monster is finally completed. Before Bob can officially reveal his creation, the secret laboratory is found by Dr. Reutgar. Bob blackmails Reutgar with pictures of his dominatrix visits with Dr. Singleton. Bob is once again in control of the situation, until Iggy forgets to feed the monster and it goes on a rampage through the hospital.
“Frankenstein General Hospital” was released in 1998 and was directed by Deborah Romare. It is a science fiction comedy horror, only short on both comedy and horror.
Many consider the film the worst Frankenstein movie ever made. I’ve seen worse. I do consider it the lamest one ever made. It is full of camp and ridiculous jokes and skits. It’s a sort of low brow “Airplane” 1980. The movie also contains a fair amount of exploitation and boobs. The skits with the naked, or near naked, nurses are reminiscent of a Benny Hill skit, but without the kazoo music. If you’re looking for a Frankenstein movie that is actually funny, then your best bet is “Young Frankenstein” 1974. If you are only looking for mind numbing bad jokes, and maybe some boobs, then you’ve come to the right place.
Bobby “Boris” Pickett has a cameo as a passenger in an elevator. Kathy Shower, who plays the feisty Dr. Alice Singleton, is a former Playboy Playmate.
