“Marge… In the past few weeks you’ve… changed.”
Bill Farrell (Tom Tryon) gets taken over by an alien on the way to his wedding. Right away things seem different. Bill is cold and unemotional. After a year of marriage his wife Marge (Gloria Talbott) knows something is not right. After that she is noticing that her husband’s friends are different too. Marge also notices that she has not been able to get pregnant. The doctor says there is nothing wrong with her. One night she follows Bill and sees the truth. Her husband is actually an alien. Marge tries to warn people. But how do you know who is an alien and who is not. And who is going to believe you?
Eventually Marge confronts Bill. He explains that he comes from a dying planet. (Half our aliens are from dying planets.) He says females have gone extinct and the males from his planet need to mate with Earth women to keep his race from becoming extinct. Yuk.
"I Married a Monster from Outer Space" was released in 1958 and was directed by Gene Fowler Jr. The name of the movie may be corny but it is done seriously. I don’t understand why it was OK for a human woman to marry an alien from outer space but it was not OK in “The Mole People” for a human man to marry a woman from a race that lived in the center of the Earth. The movies were only made 2 years apart. I don’t think times had changed that much.
A lot of people have shown sympathy for the aliens. Coming from a dying race. Not sure how to act around humans. Almost sad. Yea. Yea. Keep in mind these guys kill cats, dogs, people that are of no use, and exactly why did females go extinct on their planet to begin with. Add to that they are taking over people’s bodies. People who do not want to have their bodies taken over. Keep your sympathy. These guys are taking over. Their doing it slowly, but they’re taking over.
Don’t look for any great special effects. There isn’t much need for them since most of the time the alien’s look like people. Still its got aliens and when they do show up they are creepy looking. It’s not really cheezy or campy. More of melodramatic Science Fiction offering.
