Plain old fashion monster movie
Five years ago a tragedy caused Jonas Taylor's (Jason Statham) fall from grace and resulted in the death of some of his crew mates. The tragedy occurred over the Mariana Trench. Jonas' explanation was unbelievable. He claims a 70 foot creature attacked the vessel causing the destruction. Disgraced Jonas hides from the world. But when a submersible lies sunk and disabled at the bottom of the ocean with his ex-wife among those onboard, he is the only one who has seen this predator and lived. Jason agrees to the mission.
The research facility Mana One is being financed by billionaire egomaniac Jack Morris (Rainn Wilson). The object of the facility is to study the deeper sections of the Mariana Trench that have never been explored before. In the way is a layer of thermocline of hydrogen sulfide. The mission is to go beneath the layer and see what is there. They expect to find a world of creatures and plants that have never been seen before. A submersible is sent down. They find what they are looking for. And more. They are attacked.
Something collides with the submersible. Suyin (Bingbing Li) tries to come to their aid when she is attached by a giant squid. Taylor reacts instantly and saves the lives of the trapped crew. Everyone is returned to the Mana One, but something came back with them. When the submersible came back through the hydrogen sulfide layer, Something horrible followed.
"The Meg" was released in 2018 and was directed by Jon Turtletaub. The film is a collaboration between the US and China. It is loosely based on the book "Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror" by Steve Alten. In the book the Megalodon is almost white due to living so deep in the ocean away from sunlight. This proved difficult to render in CGI and still look like a shark.
My favorites are the little girl Meiying (the smart one), and Jaxx (cause she’s cool).
As for the movie I liked it. I will say it did change from basically a horror movie to a wild action movie. It ended up being a wild ride but I was OK with that. I wasn't looking for "Jaws" or anything more serious. I was ready to just be entertained. Of course seeing Jason Statham in nothing but a towel was not bad either.
