Hanzo is intentionally buried alive in the coffin of a young woman at a funeral service in the cemetery of a well-guarded monastery where only women are allowed. After dark he digs himself out of the grave so he can sneak into the monastery.

- Kill Bill: Vol. 2 (2004)
Beatrix Kiddo is shot with rock salt, injected with a sedative, and then buried alive in a coffin in a graveyard in someone else's grave. (The man who did all this calls it a "Texas Funeral.") She uses her martial arts close-punching skills to break the coffin lid then she digs herself to the surface.

A cataleptic woman named Madeleine is put in a crypt by her brother who knows she's still alive. She wakes up, goes insane, and breaks free.
- The Serpent and the Rainbow (1988)
A Haitian man appears to die in a missionary clinic and is buried in a grave with a catholic funeral. His coffin is lowered we see his eyes open just before he is buried alive.

A woman who suffers from catalepsy is thought to have died from a plague so she is sealed up in a coffin. She comes out of her trance and screams.

A man kidnaps and buries alive a rich businessman's wife, demanding that he is paid a million dollars in ransom before she suffocates from lack of oxygen.

A teenage girl named Candy is kidnapped and buried alive in a field with a pipe for air. When her father refuses to pay the ransom, they dig her up, rape her, then bury her alive again.
- The Prestige (2006)
Hugh Jackman and Michael Caine kidnap Christian Bale's right hand man, Fallon, nail him into a coffin and bury him alive, forcing Bale to give them the codeword that will unlock the secret to his magic trick before they tell him where he's buried.

- Ophelia (I) (2018)
Ophelia takes poison that makes her appear dead and is buried in a coffin. Horatio digs her up, she wakes up, gets an antidote from a witch, cuts off her long hair, then returns to the palace disguised as a man.
- Romeo and Juliet (1936)
In this and other filmed versions of Shakespeare's play, Juliet takes a potion that makes her appear to be dead to avoid marriage. The Friar who gave her the potion plans to rescue her in two days when she wakes, and take her to Romeo. She is given a funeral and her paralyzed but still living body is entombed in the family's underground burial vault. (She is not put in a coffin or buried underground, she is left on her back under a shroud on a raised surface.)
(Romeo learns of Juliet's death, breaks into the tomb, and finds what he thinks is Juliet's corpse. He then drinks poison and dies. When Juliet wakes, she sees Romeo's corpse and stabs herself to death with his dagger.)
- Double Jeopardy (1999)
Ashley Judd plays Libby who is sent to prison for murdering her husband, who faked his death. She gets out on parole and hunts him down, but he catches her, knocks her out and locks her inside a coffin in a tomb above ground in a cemetery in New Orleans to kill her. She wakes up next to a corpse and uses her lighter to find the hinges, then shoots them out with a pistol to escape.
- The Mask of Zorro (1998)
Zorro kills a prison guard and takes his dagger, then unlocks his jail cell. He puts on the clothes of a dead prisoner in the cell next door and plays dead. Guards put him in a cloth bag and carry him outside, drop him in an open grave, and cover him up with dirt. Then we see his hand holding a dagger burst from the grave as he digs himself out.
- Night Train (1999)
Joe is told that his friend Sam was killed by gangsters in Tijuana and buried in a coffin. He goes to the cemetery, digs up the coffin, and opens the lid. Sam is still alive, tells him where to find where Joe's brother hid a fortune, then he dies.
- The Day Evelyn Came Out of the Grave (1971)
In a cemetery, an unknown man holds a venomous snake to a second man's neck and the snake bites him, causing him to fall to the ground unable to get up. The unknown man then throws the second man, still alive, into an open grave and shovels dirt onto him.
