Imre Kosta (Jose Marco) and his wife, Justine (Shirley Corrigan), are newlyweds.  For their honeymoon, they decide to go to the village where Imre was born to visit his parents’ grave.  Imre hasn’t been there since he was a child.  The couple is excited for the trip to Transylvania even though they got a little ribbing from some of their friends about vampires.

Once there they ask the local innkeeper, Gyogyo (Bernabe Barta Barri), for directions to the cemetery.  It turns out that there are two cemeteries in the area, one old and one new.  The new one was created after WWII.  The history of the old cemetery is dark.  Imre’s parents are buried in the old cemetery.  Gyogyo warns Imre and Justine that it is not safe to go to the old cemetery.  They go anyway.

In the cemetery they are attacked by three thieves.  Imre is stabbed to death and Justine is knocked unconscious.  Before the thieves can assault Justine, she is saved by an immensely strong man.  He kills two of the men.  The third thug, Otvo (Luis Induni), runs away.  When Justine wakes up, she finds that she is at the estate of Waldemar Daninsky (Paul Naschy) and is being taken care of by his housekeeper and friend, Uswika Bathory (Elsa Zabala).  While at the house, Justine begins to fall in love with Waldemar, until she finds out that he is also a werewolf.

Justine tells Waldemar that she has a friend named Dr. Henry Jekyll (Jack Taylor) who may be able to help his condition.  The two travel to England to talk to Jekyll.  Jekyll tells them that his grandfather was responsible for creating a serum that turned people into their most base personality, but he was never able to create an antidote for the serum.  He believes he has created such an antidote and can use it to help Waldemar.  Jekyll plans on injecting Waldemar with the serum turning him into Mr. Hyde.  Then when the full moon rises and he turns into a werewolf, he will inject him with the antidote which is supposed to cure both the Mr. Hyde persona as well as cure the werewolf side of him.

The experiments proceed as expected until Jekyll’s nurse, Sandra (Mirta Miller), who is in love with Jekyll, decides that she is jealous of Justine and goes scorched earth by killing Jekyll and releasing Mr. Hyde.   As the old saying goes, it seems that hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.

“Dr. Jekyll and the Werewolf” AKA “Dr. Jekyll VS the Wolfman” AKA “Dr. Jekyll VS the Werewolf” AKA “Dr. Jekyll y el Hombre Lobo” was released in 1971 and was directed by Leon Klimovsky. The story was written by Naschy. It is a Spanish horror film and is the sixth in a series of twelve films where the main character is a werewolf called Count Waldemar Daninsky and is played by actor Paul Naschy in all the films.

Even though Naschy played the same character in the twelve films, they were never direct sequels but standalone stories.  Although all twelve movies are part of the same franchise, the only tie to all the films is Naschy, the curse, and the character name.  Naschy is noted for playing multiple roles in some of his films.  Here he plays a triple role as Waldemar, a werewolf and Mr. Hyde.

The editing is a little sloppy, but the concept of the story is interesting and one of the better Count Waldemar Daninsky offerings.
