Dr. Michael Foster (George Gerard) and Dr. Nancy Kane (Katherine Romaine) work for a company called Talos. Their current project is a top-secret government assignment. The defense department gave Talos tissue samples from an alien. As directed by their boss, Dr. Viallini (John Marcus Powell), the alien tissue was cultured, and genetic experiments were being done. One of the creatures created looked similar to a frog with big teeth and was named Spot. While Michael was trying to extract DNA from Spot the creature bit him.
The bite caused alien genetic material to infect Michael. Michael rapidly morphed into an alien. Dr. Elliot Stein (Allen Lewis Rickman) is called in to try to find a way to kill the alien without killing Michael. Eventually Elliot comes up with what he believes is a cure, involving radiation, but it is too late. The Michael Monster suddenly completes his metamorphosis, breaks his bonds and attacks Elliot. A security guard, John Griffen (Matt Kulis) responds to the emergency alarm and is also killed. Dr. Viallini calls in two fixers, Mitchell (Tony Gigante), and Jarrett (Greg Sullivan) to deal with the problem. They are given the background of the situation and are sent to destroy the Michael Monster.
In the meantime, the security guard’s two daughters, Sherry (Tara Leigh) and Kim (Dianna Flaherty) grow concerned that their father never came home from work. Sherry goes to Talos to look for him. Viallini tells her that he called in sick and never came in. Back at home Sherry finds a voice message from her father telling her that he was on his way to work but forgot his keycard. He says he will borrow one from another guard and will see he after work. Sherry now knows that Viallini lied and is hiding something. She convinces her boyfriend, Brian (Patrick Barnes) to go with her to Talos and find her father. Kim hides in the back seat and follows them into the Talos building. What they find there could result in all of them ending up Monster chow.
“Metamorphosis: The Alien Factor” was released in 1990 and was written and directed by Glenn Takajian. It is a low budget American science fiction horror film. The movie was supposed to be a sequel to “The Deadly Spawn” 1983 and was to be called “Deadly Spawn 2: The Metamorphosis”, but like the title of the movie, it morphed into something different.
The creatures are stop-motion with buckets of blood tossed around. They’re not well defined but are more of a throwback to the 50’s concept that aliens are supposed to look like blobs of flesh with teeth. The acting is not good but that sort of goes along with the style of the film. If it had less blood, and was in black and white, it could pass for a 50’s “alien from outer space” style movie. In that respect it’s not bad. If, however, you’re looking for a 90’s science fiction horror movie on par with any of the “Alien” movies or something similar, this ain’t gonna do it for ya.
There are two Metamorphosis movies that were released in 1990, this one and an Italian film written and directed by George Eastman.
