A man, traveling on horseback through Cornwall, England, stops at a local farm to ask for directions from an old woman (Jenny Cleve) to an estate called Dartmoor.  He tells the old woman he is James Barton (Frank Brana) and an Egyptologist.  He says that he has heard that the Lord of Dartmoor has a nice collection of Egyptian artifacts.  She tells him that she doesn’t know anything about that but there have been some strange stories lately about the castle and girls that have gone missing in the area.

After getting his directions, Barton continues on to the castle.  Once there he finds John (Martin Trevieres), the Lord’s manservant.  Barton wanders around the castle until he finds Lord Dartmoor (Jorge Rigaud).  Barton gives the Lord his spiel about being an Egyptologist, but Dartmoor believes that Barton is really a police inspector.  He then proceeds to tell Barton a strange tale.

He says he acquired the sarcophagus of the son (Michael Flynn) of a high priest.  The son’s tongue was cut out and he was sentenced to death for the rape, murder and mutilation of young women.  The priest put his son in a cataleptic state and buried him alive in the sarcophagus.  When Dartmoor opened the sarcophagus, he found the supposed mummy to be in pristine shape.  He brought the man back to life using electricity.  He then finds out that the mummy, in order to survive, must have fresh blood every day.  Dartmoor sends John out to find a young maiden to give to the mummy.

When the mummy is revived it uses a form of hypnosis to enslave John, making him go out each day to find a new victim.  Since his powers aren’t working on Dartmoor, he locks him in a cage in the castle dungeon.  Each day John brings a young woman to the castle for the mummy to rape and drain of blood.  This goes on for a couple months until the day that Dartmoor’s daughter Lucille (Catherine Franck) returns home to the castle.

“Love Brides of the Blood Mummy” AKA “Lips of Blood” AKA “El secreto de la momia egipcia” was released in 1973 and was directed by Alejandro Marti.  It is a Spanish French horror film with some soft-core porn.  It is a rather obscure film.  Somehow, I managed to find an English dubbed version of the movie.  My version also has subtitles, which I think is in Portuguese.

Technically, the movie is basically Euro trash but there were actually some good parts to it.  The visuals are dark and lonely, especially the landscape.  It gives the film a creepy and desolate vibe.  The movie takes place in the 1700’s so gothic is the main theme of the film.  The combination of mummy/vampire villain is, although not unique, rather rare.  Some of the scenes were a little drawn out and a little repetitive but it’s still worth a look.
