Where have all the monsters gone?
“Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus” was released in 2009 and was directed by Jack Perez. It is the first in the mega shark series. Made by the SYFY channel this “B” movie is lacking several things. First and foremost, monsters. Second good CGI. Third good acting. Fourth a decent script.
What it does have. First camera shaking. Second bad acting. Third bad dialogue. Fourth in a stunning deviation from the norm this time it is an airplane that is taken out and not a helicopter.
Sometimes the SYFY channel comes out with good movies, and sometimes they come out with “Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus”. The big shark and the big octopus are released from a glacier when an illegal buoy in the water causes a pod of whales to smack into it. This is a combination of two of the standard ways to create a monster. Natural disaster (whales crashing into glacier) and manmade (illegal buoy causing whales to go crazy).
I love monster movies. The more monster(s) the better. I can forgive a lot of bad stuff like acting, dialogue, plot and even bad CGI as long as you have good monsters. Actually, they don’t even have to be good as long as you show them a lot. Unfortunately, in this one you don’t see either one very much, especially the octopus, and they don’t get together until late in the movie. For me it just wasn’t up to the term monster movie. The only reason to have it is to round out your mega shark collection.
