A colony of Chiroptera
A single brown bat can eat up to 1,000 mosquitoes in a single hour. There are more than 1,200 species of bats. They range in size from the giant flying foxes that have a wingspan of up to 5 feet to the bumblebee bats that have a 6 inch wingspan. There are also three different species of blood-drinking vampire bats.
Bats that normally eat fruit are now eating people. Number 1 on our “How to create a monster” list is Genetic engineering. This time a virus was introduced to the bats to change their genetic makeup so they are smarter, bigger, meaner, and omnivore. They begin to work together and start attacking and killing people in clouds.
Dr. Sheila Casper (Dina Meyer) a zoologist who specializes in bats is called in to a town in Texas to help with the problem. Along with her is Sheriff Emmett Kimsey (Lou Diamond Phillips). In order to stop this plague of flying rodents they need to find the roost, and go down into it. And they need to do it before the military bombs the place and scatters them.
The bats in the film were a combination of animatronics, CGI, and 2 live bats. The 2 original bats in the film were brought over from Indonesia.
It’s scary and creepy. The bats are wickedly nasty looking. And the carnage is everywhere. Of course since they are bats most of the action takes place at night which makes it a little more difficult to see what is going on. But action there is. It’s a true horror movie of the first caliber.
