Named after Tiburcio Vasquez, a notorious bandit who was known as the “Scourge of California”, Vasquez Rocks have been the movie industry's most recognizable film location. The rocks are located along the San Andreas Fault less than an hour north of Los Angeles. It is believed that the rocks were created 25 million years ago by a violent earthquake along the fault line. Literally hundreds of movies and television shows have used the hogback ridge as a backdrop for westerns and as alien landscapes for science fiction films and shows.
