Ellie Cooper (Shirley Mitchell) takes her daughter Ruth (Denise Alexander) to see Dr. Madison (Whit Bissell). Dr. Madison finds nothing physically wrong with Ruth; however, the girl seems to have problems with her memory. She doesn’t know her name or recognize her mother. Ellie and Ruth have just arrived in Greenville from Chicago. Ellie grew up in the small town, but Ruth has never been here before. Before Ruth leaves, she calls Dr. Madison “Uncle Dar”.
Madison only knew one person who ever called him Uncle Dar and that was Peggy, the daughter of Ira and Martha Perry (Boris Karloff and Olive Blakeney). Madison has Ellie bring Ruth to the home of Ira and Martha. Ruth begins to recognize things about the place; even the family dog seems to know her. She begins to call Martha, mother. Ruth begins to act as if she is Peggy, the Perrys’ daughter. Peggy, however, died years ago.
“Whatever Happened to Peggy?” is the twelfth episode created for the anthology series “The Veil”. It is one of 4 episodes compiled for the feature film “Destination Nightmare”. The other episodes were "Destination Nightmare", “The Return of Madame Vernoy” and “Girl on the Road”. Series creator Frank P. Bibas discovered the movie compilations one night by accident. Bibas had never been consulted and therefore never authorized them.
This episode deals with possession.
This episode and "Destination Nightmare" have different introductions and closings from the other episodes which make them appear to have been the last episodes produced before production shut down because of lack of funds. They both also have copyright dates of 1959 instead of 1958.
Although none of the vignettes in the series are original or intriguing, they are competently done, with some decent actors. The main draw of the series is Boris Karloff. His characters may not be detailed but you do get to see a bit of his range as far as his acting capabilities.
