Small furry teeth with a serious case of the munchies.
Eight dangerous prisoners called Krites escape from a prison asteroid. They steal a ship and land in the back yard of the Brown family. Helen (Dee Wallace), Jay (Billy Green Busch) and their two children Brad (Scott Grimes) and April (Nadine Van der Velde). Jay and Brad go to investigate. They find a dead half eaten cow. Next the Krites eat a deputy and then surround the Brown family farm house. They cut off the power and attack the father. The family is now trapped. The daughter April is in the barn with her boyfriend. One of the Krites attacks and kills her boyfriend. Brad rescues his sister by feeding a home made firecracker to the critter. It of course eats it.
In the meantime, two bounty hunters are sent to destroy them. The bounty hunters are shape shifters. They can change their features to duplicate someone else’s face. One of the bounty hunters copies the face of a famous rock star Johnnie Stevens. The other one can’t find anything he wants to transform into so he ends up transforming into just about everyone he sees. The two of them pretty much just shoot up the town.
The Krites or critters are cute little fur balls. At least until they smile. Then they are creepy little fur balls with sharp pointy teeth, red eyes and a taste for meat. On top of their heads they have poisonous darts they can shoot. When they want to get somewhere they just curl up into a little ball and roll there. They have big appetites and when they eat they start to grow. At least one of them does. Tribbles they are not.
Released in 1986 The critters in “Critters” are brought to you from the mind of the Chiodo brothers. It is a horror/comedy. With emphasis on the ridiculous. Corey Burton does the voice of the Krites. The language of the critters is reported to be a combination of French and Japanese. The movie does provide subtitles for those not fluent in Krite. The movie is just fun to watch. It’s impossible to take it seriously. After all, just look at those adorable little monsters.
