In a secret facility in the California desert, a group of scientists and government military types are gathered to see a demonstration conducted by Dr. Williams (Art Payton). Williams has with him, Lisa Martyn (Angelique Pettyjohn). Lisa is a psychic whose abilities can be intensified with the help of Dr. Williams. Hooked up to the doctor’s equipment, Lisa has the ability to reach mentally into other dimensions and bring back solid items, a sort of matter transfer from one dimension to another. Watching the demonstration are General Randolph (Aldo Ray), a mercenary type serviceman named Reiger (David O’Hara), a couple politicians and two army guys, Mitchell Carter (William Fair) and Mike Hodgson (Frank McDonald), who are on hand to do any necessary heavy lifting.
Lisa is outfitted with a special helmet designed to augment the psychic waves. She manages to bring from another dimension a small carved statue and a somewhat large container that appears to be some kind of foreign alloy. General Randolph orders that the container be put aboard a jeep and taken to another facility for investigation. While the others return in one jeep, Mitchell, Mike and a security guard (Bret Miller) are in a jeep truck with the container. On the way back, the container opens and the guard, who was riding in the back of the jeep, is murdered. The occupant of the container runs off.
Also in the container is a large cylinder. Mike steals the cylinder thinking it will make him rich. Later Mitchell receives a call from Mike telling him about the cylinder and that it appears to be opening on its own. Mitchell and Lisa rush to Mike’s house. They open the cylinder and find a baby creature that, although small, is capable enough to attack Mike before being killed by Mitchell.
In the meantime, the adult alien creature is running around killing anyone it comes in contact with. Mitchell is charged with finding and killing the creature. Lisa asks to help in the investigation since she is attuned to it and believes she can help locate it. The creature begins a killing spree across the countryside. Mitchell, with Lisa and a Geiger counter, search for it.
“Biohazard” was released in 1985 and was directed by Fred Olen Ray. It is an American science fiction horror film.
It was a bit of silly nonsense, but it was fun. Ray is not known for his epic filmmaking anyway. In some ways it pokes fun at the “Alien” franchise due to the ridiculous little chest-burster type alien incorporated into the story. What I mostly noted in the film is the all-around really bad acting. The plot is just your standard alien run-amok story. The alien creature is the size of a child but very lethal. The music score is mostly techno, and not all that bad.
If you can get past the bad acting and so-so special effects, it ends up being an OK time waster. There are some outtakes at the end of the film that really illustrate how bad the actors were when it came to remembering their lines. That and a twist at the end that didn’t really follow along the already random plot make the movie prime fodder for riffing.
The monster was played by Christopher Ray, the director's seven-year-old son.
Angelique Pettyjohn, who played Lisa, is most recognized as Shahna from the original Star Trek series. She played the ‘drill thrall’ in season 2 episode 16 “The Gamesters of Triskelion”.
