Maybe it was a spider monkey.
A dead body is brought into the hospital. An alien spider crawls out of the body bag and bites the morgue attendant. An exterminator, Alex Mathis (Greg Grunberg) who happens to be in the building is assigned the job of catching it. Along with him is a security guard Jose Ramos (Lombardo Boyer).
Meanwhile a military attachment led by Major Braxton Tanner (Ray Wise), and a scientist (Patrick Bauchau) descend on the hospital. The spider continues to grow and kill. The spider escapes the hospital and starts a destructive path through Los Angeles.
Can an exterminator and Jose do something that the military can’t? Kill the big ass spider?
"Bid Ass Spider" was released in 2013 and was directed by Mide Mendez. It is a science fiction horror comedy, with the emphasis on comedy.
An accidental cross between alien DNA and a spider has created a spider that is strong, smart, fast, and is growing at an exponential rate. The number one way to create a monster, genetic engineering. This time accidentally.
Grunberg is funny, but his accidental sidekick (Jose) is hysterical. (And seems to know more about spider habits than the exterminator.) There are also sight gags peppered here and there to bring additional visual comedy throughout. The special effects are great. The spider is fast creepy and seems to have a personality all its own. There are explosions and machine gun fire. The spider webs are well done and everything blends in together well. The action is pretty much non-stop. It’s just a really fun movie to watch. It takes the usual big bug monster movie and turns it upside down.
The exterminator company owned by Alex Mathis, the "Western Exterminator Company", is the name of an actual pest control company. The phone number used in the movie is their actual number.
