I’m someone you can trust Ann. I’m a movie producer.
Carl Denham makes movies. His latest is a spectacular affair and he needs a leading lady for it. He hires Ann Darrow. It’s her big break. They need to go on location to shoot. An expedition to a mysterious island called Skull Island. Jack Driscoll the writer is with them, not that he wanted to be. They finally find the island. It’s inhabited by natives and they are insane. Unlike Kong.
Kong is worshiped by the natives. He is the ruler of the island. All other animals whether they be dinosaurs or just big critters are nothing compared to him. Dinosaurs are just big lizards. Bugs are bugs. But Kong. You can see the intelligence in his eyes. Kong is the prize. Kong is the King.
"King Kong" was released in 2005 and was directed by Peter Jackson. I’m not even going to try to compare the 2005 version with the 1933 version. You can’t. They are both great. They are both ground breaking. And I love them both. What I will talk about is what I love about this movie.
As for Jack Black’s performance as Carl Denham. I found that believable. I could see him portraying a manipulative egotist. So full of himself as to come close to being a sociopath. And I think he did a great job of it.
Now Naomi Watts as Ann Darrow is also a great performance. It’s not easy to have a conversation with something that’s not really there. She manages to not only look like she’s talking to a Giant Gorilla but also having a rapport with him. Especially the scenes in New York City. By then they have an emotional bond.
The score is sweeping dark and mysterious. It adds so much to the mood. The action is full force once they reach the island. Is it long? Yes, but there’s a lot going on. And I got no place I gotta be. Besides, in a regular movie you’re lucky if you have one T-Rex, in Kong you have three. And Kong beats the crap out of them. As far as I’m concerned the more monsters the better. It never gets old to me. I hope I never get jaded to the point where it does.
