“One Million B.C.” AKA “Cave Man” AKA “Cave man, Man and His Mate” AKA “Tumak” was released in 1940 and was directed by Hal Roach and Hal Roach Jr. It is an American fantasy film. The movie stars Victor Mature, Carole Landis and Lon Chaney Jr. The film was nominated for two Academy Awards: Best Musical Score and Best Special Effects. The majority of the special effects were dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures, volcanos and landslides. The Roaches used a lot of real animals to depict the dinosaurs. The movie was controversial for its use of live animals in the fighting sequences and some animals did die. The film caused the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) to ban many of the treatments of animals that occurred during the production of the film.
The animals used to depict the dinosaurs and prehistoric mammals included a pig in a rubber Triceratops suit, a man in an Allosaurus suit, Asian elephants with fake tusks and fur to make them look like Woolly Mammoths, Two dogs, Brahman cattle with fake horns and fur made up to look like muskoxen, a sun bear cub, a six-banded armadillo with fake horns, a baby alligator with a Dimetrodon-like sail glued on its back, a rhinoceros iguana, a snake, a coati, to represent an oversized Megistotherium, a monitor lizard, an anole, and an Argentine black and white tegu.
The movie ended up in the public domain. The film, as well as outtakes from it, went into the stock footage library. This footage was used by many companies and film producers over the years. Throughout the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s, bits and pieces of the film, mostly the dinosaur, rockslide and volcano sequences, went into various dinosaur movies and westerns.
