“Shock Theater” (marketed as Shock!) was a package of 52 pre-1948 classic horror and mystery films from Universal Studios that were released for television syndication in 1957 by Screen Gems, the television subsidiary of Columbia Pictures. The Shock Theater package included staples such as Dracula, Frankenstein, The Mummy, The Invisible Man and The Wolf Man as well as some mystery and spy films. A second package of films called “Son of Shock” was released in 1958, again by Screen Gems.  This package included 20 horror films from both Universal and Columbia Pictures. 

Shock Theater films usually aired on late night television and on weekends.  Many of the films were introduced by “horror hosts” such as “Commander USA”, “Svengoolie”, “Elvira, Mistress of the Dark” and others.  The hosts were sometimes part of syndicated shows such as “Chiller Theater” and “Creature Features”.  The shows and films were a hit.
