Dr. Krupp (Luis Aceves) AKA “The Bat” is a diabolical criminal. Having been captured trying to steal priceless artifacts from the Aztec Mummy Popoca, his loyal henchmen devise a plot to free him from police custody. In a brazen daytime attack on a police transport the gang frees Krupp despite the attempts by the masked crime fighter “The Angel” (Crox Alvarado).
After the escape The Angel visits Dr. Eduardo Almada (Ramon Gay) and his fiance Flor Sepulveda (Rosita Arenas) to warn them that The Bat is free and their lives are in danger. The Bat had been trying to use Flor to help him get the mummy’s gold breastplate and bracelet. Through the use of hypnotic regression on Flor Dr. Almada discovered that she was Popoca’s lover Xochitl in a past life. Popoca was buried alive after having an affair with the temple maiden and as punishment must guard her tomb in the Great Pyramid of Yucatan.
Now that Krupp is free he once again tries to get the Aztec treasure. Krupp has Flor kidnapped. He hypnotizes her and regresses her back to her prior life as Xochitl in order to use her previous memories to find the tomb. Dr. Almada is then lured to The Bat’s hideout. The Bat needs him to translate the information on the breastplate and bracelet once he has them so he can find where the Aztec treasure is hidden. The Angel tries to rescue them but gets captured as well. The Bat manages to find the breastplate and bracelet; however, in doing so he has awakened the mummy.
“The Curse of the Aztec Mummy” AKA “La Maldicion de la Momia Azteca” was released in 1957 and was directed by Rafael Portillo. It is a Mexican horror movie and the second film in the Aztec Mummy trilogy. It is one of the films dubbed and released by K. Gordon Murray for American audiences. All three films in the trilogy were shot back to back.
After the trilogy was completed, filmmakers were not ready to let go of the Aztec mummy plot devise. In 1964 the movie “The Wrestling Women vs the Aztec Mummy” was released, and in 2007 the film “Mils Mascaras vs the Aztec Mummy” was released. Not to be left out Jerry Warren jumped on the bandwagon and created his masterpiece “Attack of the Mayan Mummy” in 1963. Warren bought the rights to the first movie “The Aztec Mummy”. He then Americanized it by doing one of his little cut and paste jobs. He cut out a bunch of footage and added some new stuff with American actors.
As for “Curse of the Aztec Mummy”, for some reason a masked superhero luchador was added to the film. Usually they are the hero and save the day. In this case he’s not exactly a champion since he loses every fight, has to have a young boy rescue him from a pit of vipers, gets tied up and gets unmasked toward the end. He’s probably the worst superhero I’ve ever seen. The real hero of the film is the mummy. The luchador may have been useless but he managed to amp up the camp factor exponentially.
The mummy itself doesn’t show up until the end of the film. Before that you have Angel the luchador superhero and the over the top evil Dr. Krupp, complete with Satanist Anton LaVey goatee, to keep you amused. Some stock footage in the form of the first movie “The Aztec Mummy” is also incorporated. At only slightly above an hour in length it’s just a silly bunch of cheeze that was probably meant to be a horror film but ended up being funny as all hell.
