When Godzilla and King Caesar defeated Mechagodzilla the robot's parts were thrown into the sea. Interpol sends the submarine Akatsuki to retrieve the head of the robot to analyze it. Suddenly the submarine is attacked by a giant sea monster and destroyed.
A tape from the sub just before it blew up reveals that they were attacked by a dinosaur. The subsequent investigation reveals that a scientist named Shinzo Mafune had predicted the existence of the dinosaur and named it Titanosaurus. Shinzo was labeled a kook. He grew bitter and shut himself away with his daughter Katsura. When Interpol agent Murakoshi and biologist Akira Ichinose go to see Shinzo his daughter tells them he is dead.
In reality he is alive and working for Mechagodzilla’s alien creators. The aliens are working on creating a new, more powerful Mechagodzilla. I guess he’s actually Mechagodzilla 2. Shinzo controls Titanosaurus and the aliens control Mechagodzilla 2. With the two super monsters the aliens plan on destroying mankind so they can take over the Earth. Interpol finds out that Titanosaurus can be turned away using supersonic waves. They start building a devise that they can use against the monster.
In the meantime, Ichinose is falling in love with Katsura. Unaware that her father is alive and responsible for Titanosaurus’s attack he tells her about the supersonic wave machine. Katsura tells her father and the aliens. Katsura is instructed to sabotage the devise. Even though Katsura has feelings for Ichinose, she does as she is told. Katsura is not all she appears to be. Due to an accident Katsura was almost killed during one of her father’s experiments. To save her life, the aliens made her part cyborg.
With the aliens holding all the cards Mechagodzilla 2 and Titanosaurus are unleashed. Interpol is in a mad dash to try to fix the supersonic wave machine but may not be able to complete the repairs in time to prevent the two super weapons from destroying Tokyo. Japan’s only hope is Godzilla.
“Terror of Mechagodzilla” was released in 1975 and was directed by Ishiro Honda. It is the fifteenth film in the Godzilla franchise and the last in the Showa series. It is the last Godzilla film directed by the original Godzilla director Ishiro Honda. It is a sequel to “Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla”. The music score, one of the best parts of the film, was done by Akira Ifukube.
At one point during Godzilla’s dust up with Mechagodzilla 2, Godzilla’s back catches on fire.
Technically it is one the only Godzilla films with any nudity. In the scene where Katsura is being operated on by the aliens her breasts are exposed. I said technically, the body on the table is actually a dummy but it’s still boobies and they looked sorta real so that part was cut from the US versions of the film.
This was Akihiko Hirata's final appearance in the series. He played Dr. Daisuke Serizawa, the scientist who invented the oxygen destroyer in the first Godzilla movie. He was supposed to be in the next Godzilla film but died of cancer before production began.
This film was good for several reasons. Ishiro Honda, Akira Ifukube and Akihiko Hirata were all in both the first and the last Godzilla movie of the Showa period. The movie itself was more interesting than some of the later films in the Showa series. The story had some interesting twists to it and there were lots of explosions and fight scenes. It seemed geared more toward adults than children. I was also fond of the silly looking Titanosaurus. He’s on my list of top ten favorite Godzilla monsters. I’m still not crazy about the Megaro Goji Godzilla suit.
Although the aliens are suppose to be the same ones that were in “Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla” none of them turn into ape creatures. I believe at least one of them turns green, but that’s about it.
